We haven’t seen the Chevy Trailblazer since U.S. production was halted in 2009, but make no mistake–this is more than a simple reboot. The 2021 version is a sportier, better designed, and better looking subcompact crossover SUV with modern safety and tech features. Shoppers looking at the Mazda CX-30 or Hyundai Kona would do well to add the Trailblazer to the mix.

Interior

In the smallish subcompact realm, we never expect big dimensions, but the Trailblazer does a good job of eking out every inch to deliver comfortable cabin proportions. Materials are definitely modest and the Trailblazer doesn’t aspire beyond economy, but the dash cluster is well-designed, simple, and driver-friendly. The back seat is okay for children or small adults, but most won’t want to suffer the cramped legroom for more than short trips.

Exterior

While the interior doesn’t overwhelm, the Trailblazer exterior is a showstopper. Sporty and stylish, this updated version puts its early incarnation to shame and competes well with other vehicles in its class. The grille is reminiscent of the Toyota Rav 4 with squinting headlights and multi-angled corners. Also like the Rav 4, the Trailblazer offers a two tone roof color that compliments the athletic look of the vehicle.

Features

It’s interesting that while more expensive and larger SUVs in the Chevy line only offer the latest Safety Assist features as optional, the carmaker chose to outfit the Trailblazer with this tech as standard on all models. But we’re not complaining! That suite includes 6 primary features that emphasize accident prevention:

  • Forward collision alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Front pedestrian braking
  • Lane keep assist with departure warning
  • Following distance indicator
  • Automatic high beam assist

Other noteworthy standard tech on the Trailblazer is the Infotainment 3 system with a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth audio streaming, and Apple/Android compatibility.

From trim to trim, there are feature variations that start off as mild in the lower L and LS trim models, then escalate as you move into the pricier LT and above trims. Notable features in higher trims include keyless entry and ignition; cruise control; heated front seats; two-tone roof; faux leather interior; exterior styling accents.

Optional packages (also only available on LT and trims and above):

  • Driver Confidence package
    • Blind-spot monitor
    • Rear cross-traffic alert
    • Rear parking sensors
  • Convenience package
    • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
    • Rear-seat USB charge ports
    • Household-style power outlet
    • Automatic climate control
    • 8-inch touchscreen
    • Satellite radio
  • The Technology package (Activ and RS trims only)
    • LED headlights
    • Adaptive cruise control
    • Upgraded infotainment system
    • Wireless charging pad
    • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
    • Bose premium audio system
    • High-resolution rearview camera

Power & Handling

An agreeable road-driver, the Trailblazer handles well and is pleasantly peppy even with the base level ECOTEC 1.2L turbo engine. We were surprised more than once by its responsive acceleration and turning in city street/highway conditions. AWD is available in all trims and, when chosen, is paired with the beefier 1.3 L turbo engine.

Chevy positions the new Trailblazer as a capable off-roader, but its performance and ride is calibrated more towards blazing a trail to the supermarket than the campsite. For mild dirt roads you’ll be fine, but don’t expect the same hill climbing and river crossing capabilities found in larger Chevy SUVs.

Final Thought

This is what a successful model relaunch looks like. At this price and with these features, the Trailblazer stacks up against subcompact crossovers from Hyundai, Mazda, Toyota, and Honda–and may even divert buyers considering Chevy’s own Trax. We predict that the stylish and fun Trailblazer will be sticking around a lot longer than it did during its last production run. Welcome back, Trailblazer.
