If the Suburban is just too much car for your needs, consider the 2nd largest SUV in Chevy’s lineup. Successfully redesigned in 2021, the 2022 Tahoe features more standard driver assist/safety features and a larger, customizable 12.3 inch digital gauge cluster that’s standard in all but the LS base model.

Interior

While it never skimped on interior space, the Tahoe gained nearly 30 additional cubic feet of cargo space when it was updated last year. To appreciate its new proportions, just consider it is only about 20 cubic feet shy of the mammoth Suburban (with seat area). With these dimensions, the 3rd row is adult-friendly and hauling capacity is ample for any assortment of toys or tools you can throw at it.

Except in the base model version, the 2022 Tahoe features a larger digital gauge cluster with well-placed gauges and controls. As manufacturers are pressed to add more and more features to their flagship SUVs to stay competitive, the driver’s seat can sometimes resemble that of a commercial airplane cockpit. The Tahoe earns high marks for keeping things as simple as possible without hiding features too deep in complex switches or digital submenus.

2022 Chevrolet Tahoe Premier

Exterior

Hose off the dirt, and your Tahoe looks downright elegant. From our vantage point, it outclasses equal-footing competitors such as the Sequoia and even looks sportier than the upmarket Lexus LX. The color palette is expanded in 2022 to include a handful of new metallic shades.

Features

New in 2022, the Tahoe comes standard with Chevy Safety Assist, which includes forward collision alert with advanced braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist, follow distance indicator, and auto high beam headlights.

There are 6 Tahoe trims with escalating features that, at the top level High Country model ($71,100) include four-corner air ride adaptive suspension, a 10.2-inch infotainment center with built in Google and Wi-Fi hotspot, a 15-inch diagonal multi-color Head-Up display, advanced trailering system, and 13 different camera views. A power sliding center console automatically slides the center console back to discover a secure space to hold extra items or valuables.

For 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban LT trims and above, Google built-in comes standard, offering access to Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play right on the infotainment screen.

Power & Handling

The Tahoe, which is built on the same frame as the Silverado truck, didn’t always have great drive characteristics, but the welcome addition of independent rear suspension has mostly resolved that concern. The new Tahoe pairs comfort and stability on or off road and makes for an excellent family hauler on road trips.

The Tahoe’s available 3.0L turbo-diesel engine maxes out the SUV’s MPG (EPA estimated 28 highway), making it the most fuel-efficient full-size in the Chevy family. The 6.2-liter V8, now available on the RST, Z71, and Premier trim levels, is the choice for power hungry drivers who love its 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. Rounding out the threeseome of engine choices is the 5.3-liter Ecotec3 V8 option, which has neither the fuel economy of the diesel nor the power of the 6.2 V8.

Final Thought

The 2022 Tahoe remains a top recommendation for shoppers looking for a full-size family SUV with plenty of tech and standard safety features. For best value, we suggest taking a closer look at the mid-range LT, RST, and Z71 trims. Higher end models don’t compare well with equally-priced luxury competition and the base LS doesn’t include some of the features and flourishes that we found particularly impressive.
