Looking to level up the power and capacity of your pick up? The 2022 Silverado HD delivers outstanding torque/tow numbers, more cargo volume than its HD competition, and several well-considered features geared towards making hard work look easy.

Interior

The Silverado gets points for its spacious and sturdy cabin construction. Chevy claims best-in-class front row head and leg room and it’s immediately believable sitting behind the driver’s seat.

Ample available storage in the rear row under and behind seats, as well as in the front row’s center console, provide space for valuables, expensive tools, or other items that require more security.

The dash is functional and includes wireless Apple/Android connectivity and an available premium audio system. Mysteriously, the Silverado HD didn’t receive the same interior refresh that the 1500 lighter duty models got. We wouldn’t call it old school, but compared to the 1500’s large, new infotainment touchscreen and configurable gauge cluster, this Silverado looks fairly basic.

Exterior

The Silverado Heavy Duty has a beefy, boxy front end to house its monstrous engine. It cuts the imposing profile common in the heavy-duty truck world, with squarer and wider angles than the sleeker, modern lines you’ll find in trucks fated for lighter duty chores.

It may be brutish, but everything–from LED headlights, side steps, trailering mirrors, and a multi-function tailgate–is cleanly integrated into its tough exterior.

In the rear, shoppers will take note of the Silverado’s Durabed, which offers class-leading cargo volume with a dozen built-in tie-downs, available LED cargo area lighting and a 120-volt outlet to charge power tools.

Features

There are 5 trim levels available for the Silverado HD: Work Truck; Custom; LT; LTZ; and High Country. Standard on all trims are features such as hitch guidance, dual zone climate control, an infotainment touchscreen with Apple/Android compatibility, and Chevy’s StabiliTrak electronic stability/traction control system.

Buyers looking to upgrade their driving experience can select from options such as a premium Bose audio system, additional power points, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless charging.

There are also several available features designed to ease the duties common for heavy-duty drivers. For example, Silverado offers 8 available cameras that give you up to 15 unique views, which is especially helpful when managing heavier trailers. Likewise, features such as Jack-Knife Alert, Trailer Length Indicator, and Trailer Angle Indicator with Guidelines, take the anxiety out of moving cumbersome loads.

Chevy also offers a heads-up display option that projects speed, navigation and available active safety alerts onto your windshield. Such safety alerts include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane change/departure warnings, and rear cross traffic alert.  While these features are routinely found on smaller framed SUVs and even sedans, they are perhaps more valuable on heavier vehicles like the Silverado, where heavier weight and larger dimensions can make traffic navigation and reaction time more consequential and challenging.

Power & Handling

The standard 6.6L V8 is capable of 464 lb. ft. of torque that hauls loads up to 17,370 lbs., but drivers looking for an even heavier duty Silverado can opt for the 6.6 L Duramax Turbo-Diesel that more than doubles the truck’s tow capacity. Don’t expect to save at the pumps with those numbers. The Silverado has atrocious, but standard for its class, fuel economy averaging about 14 city / 19 highway MPG.

While function is great–the Silverado can be relied upon to get the biggest jobs done–the road feel and handling takes some adjusting to and can feel loose.

Final Thought

If you are routinely hauling or trailering extra heavy loads, the 2022 Chevy Silverado HD is the beast of burden that will ease your biggest jobs and give you all the muscle you could ask for. This is a no nonsense, heavy duty truck built to tackle the tasks that would make your light duty pickup buckle.
