A compact crossover SUV with a clean interior and modern safety features, the Encore GX stands out in Buick’s “En” family (Encore, Enclave, Envision) for its outstanding overall value.

Interior

Buick is renowned for its womb-like cabins that translate into a quiet and comfortable ride experience and the GX is no different. The interior is solidly built, and while it’s not exceptionally plush, it still feels elegant and rich compared to other crossovers in the same price range.

All controls are easy to access and use with an intuitive, simple panel layout.  The center infotainment system is also well-designed and offers standard hands-free texting and Apple/Android compatibility, as well as optional Wi-Fi hotspot.

For a compact crossover, the GX also has a reasonable amount of cargo volume. Though not as spacious as even economy-level competitors (Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, etc.), the 50 cubic ft. it does offer feels roomy and generous. In fact, one of the key differentiators between the regular Encore and Encore GX model is additional cargo and storage space.

Exterior

On the spectrum of compact crossovers, with the Honda HR-V representing the ugliest of the breed and the Audi Q3 the best, the Encore falls squarely in the middle of the pack. It’s attractive enough with its athletic stance and has some nice molded metal design flairs on its sides, but it doesn’t stand out from the rest of the vehicles in this crowded division.

Features

Available in three trims, the GX provides escalating standard features, topping out with the $28,600 Essence. Broken out by trim below, we highlight standard features at each trim level. Exclusive to the Sport Touring package, available on all trim levels, is a sporty mesh grill and integrated roof rails.

Important to note is Buick’s inclusion of advanced safety features at all levels. No matter which Encore you select, you and your loved ones will be transported safely thanks to features such as forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, following distance indicator, IntelliBeam® auto high beams and front pedestrian braking.

Power & Handling

We said the GX was comfortable, and it is, but its 3-banger engine left us discomforted. There are more diplomatic ways to state it, but put plainly, the GX is a bit of a wimp. The engine strain is noticeable and passing maneuvers can be challenging if you’re not already at speed. If a 9 second 0-60mph is acceptable for your drive-style, you’ll be fine in this Encore. Otherwise, you should look elsewhere.

In spite of its lack of juice, the Encore GX still handles nicely and feels balanced and responsive.

Final Thought

Buick is constantly flirting with American buyers unwilling to settle for the simplistic and cheap interiors of economy competitors but unwilling to pay premium prices for luxury brands that offer tech and features many drivers don’t understand or use. In this instance, they hit a bullseye with a small, reasonably-priced SUV that clearly beats out the low-end while at the same time edging near the style and comfort found in the high-end.
